I was so excited to be able to photograph and attend my first doljanchi. Doljanchi (or Dol) is a Korean tradition that celebrates the birthday of a one-year-old baby. This ceremony blesses the child with a prosperous future.
Shi Hyun Lee turned a big ONE with a big party at Red & Green Brazilian Steak House in Atlanta, Georgia. She was wearing a hanbok (traditional Korean dress) and a traditional hat, a jobawi or gulle for a baby girl. Mommy Yulisa and Daddy Lee were so excited celebrating their little angel, Shi Hyun Lee, first birthday.
The highlight of the doljanchi is a doljabi ceremony on a child’s first birthday. Several items are placed before Shi Hyun Lee, such as a string or thread (symbolize long healthy life), money (symbolize prosperity), books, a Korean calligraphy set (symbolize a scholar), stethoscope (symbolize a doctor). The type and order in which she selects the items is said to give a clue to her personality and future.
Guess what? Shi Hyun Lee chose a brush and a stethoscope which represent a scholar and a doctor! She might become a great doctor someday.
Congratulations Shi Hyun Lee on your first big birthday! Hope you also enjoy the Minnie Mouse Cake that I especially made for you :)
Thank you Lee family for inviting me capturing your little angel!
